Bret Michaels Diabetes Interview – Life as a Type 1 Diabetic

Ever since I was a kid back in the 80s, I’ve always liked the band Poison.  I can remember lying on my bed next to my small stereo cassette player, my hand on the record button as I waited for Poison to rock the airwaves.  I’d sing along to ballads like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Fallen Angel”.  I didn’t know what a diabetic was and I didn’t know that the lead singer of my then favorite band was suffering from the same disease that would strike me almost 20 years later.

Bret Michaels, the lead singer of the band Poison, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6.  He has raised significant amounts of money for diabetes research, including winning Celebrity Apprentice in 2010.  He is the father of two young girls, one of whom was recently diagnosed as pre diabetic.  On this past evening’s episode of Piers Morgan Tonight, Bret discussed growing up with type 1 diabetes and learning of his daughter’s diagnosis.

For me, one of the best quotes from the Bret Michael’s interview came at the end when he talked about the importance of exercise, “I say this to everyone who is diabetic who is able still to do it, is to get out and move.  You gotta move all the time.  It keeps the blood sugar down.  It makes you think positive.  It really helps a lot.”
