Holly – “Arnold and Me”
Holly was diagnosed with type 1 on December 11, 2006 when she was 22-years-old. She manages her diabetes with the help of her insulin pump, which she nicknamed Arnold (because he “pumps her up”). She also uses a CGM that she named Constance (because it monitors her “constantly”). Holly describes herself as first and foremost, a Christian who believes in God and Jesus Christ. She is both a “southern belle and tomboy at the same time”. She married in 2008 and currently works as a terrestrial environments engineer for NASA. Visit Holly’s Blog: “Arnold and Me”.

Dear Mother of a Tomboy
Dear mother of a tomboy,I see you there, in the grocery store, with her trailing a few feet behind you. Her straight brown hair touches her shoulders, blue T-shirt, knee-length plaid shorts, and converse sneakers. Her soft blue eyes catch mine. You give her a look as if to say, “Come on, already!”… Read More

Halfway There!
As of last week, I have officially lost half of my baby weight! I’m down 7.5 lbs, and I feel great about it! I got on my first pair of pre-pregnancy jeans this past weekend. I had a huge muffin top and the button felt like it was about to pop off, but they were buttoned (dangit)!  I’m losing… Read More

What I’m Doing for Her
Today we had Monkey’s 2 month checkup, and she is growing along famously!  She is 13 lbs 13 oz and 24.5 in long, above the 95th percentile for weight and height.  She literally is a chunky monkey!  I’m still exclusively breastfeeding her (And by exclusively, I mean ONLY… Read More

Keeping Up with the Regular Stuff
Last week, I had an appointment with my General Practitioner to update some of my non-diabetes prescriptions (yes, I have some of those!) and to talk about my post-pregnancy body.  Some things came up towards the end of my pregnancy that I wanted to talk to someone about, so I made an… Read More

Losing It
Two weeks ago, I had my 6-week pp appointment with my OB. I have been cleared to resume my normal physical activities, including working out. When I was pregnant and watching the scale continue to increase, I said to myself I wouldn’t worry about the number as long as me and baby were healthy…. Read More

New Lifestyle, New Basal Rates
Before I got pregnant, my basal rates were dictated by my schedule.  When I got up, how busy my work was, when I tried to work out most days, when I went to bed, etc.  So I had several basal rates throughout the day.  When I got pregnant, I stuck with one basal rate for the whole… Read More

We Did This!
Today is a very special day for my friend Kim who started the You Can Do This project on this day last year.  YCDT is a movement for members of the DOC to post videos of their journey with diabetes for other people with diabetes to relate to, be inspired by, or simply not feel alone. … Read More

Just Call Me Bessy
Before I had my daughter, I knew I wanted to try breastfeeding.  I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself to absolutely breastfeed because I didn’t want to be stressed out if it didn’t work.  I knew I couldn’t be a good mom if I felt like my baby wasn’t getting nourished.  But I… Read More

Recovery
It’s been 3 weeks since my daughter’s birth, and I’m still recovering from the C-section surgery and the pregnancy itself.  Immediately following my surgery, my numbers shot up to the 300s for the next several hours.  I think the spike had more to do with the fact that I hadn’t eaten… Read More

Birth Story: Part 2
See Part 1 here.   Dr. P gets into her scrubs while W instructs me on how to push.  I was to wait until I’m at the peak of my contraction, hold my breath, curl over my stomach, and push into my bottom like I’m about to poo.  I would push for 10 seconds, take a breath, and do it again… Read More

Birth Story: Part 1
It’s been a week since my daughter’s birth.  And I finally feel ready to blog about it.  Partly because I’ve finally had time to collect my thoughts on it, but mostly because I’ve had time to deal with it emotionally.  Let’s get one thing straight first:  I have a perfectly… Read More

In Love
It’s been a crazy week at the hospital since my induction started on Monday night, but most importantly is the fact that my daughter is here and healthy.  She was born on May 22, 2012 at 7:18 pm, 8 lbs 8 oz and 20.5 inches long.  She is perfect, from her full head of hair to her audible… Read More

Dear Daughter
Dear Daughter,     Hello, Sweetheart. I don’t know if you can hear me, but you seem to respond when I laugh or hear Daddy talk. So I’m going to assume that you can for just a little bit.     Tomorrow is a big day for you because it is your birthday! I know it’s… Read More

38 Weeks: Ready or Not, Here She Comes
This week has been a real busy week in preparing for our daughter’s arrival.  I had so much anxiety about my OB appointment on Wednesday because I was worried about her size and being induced earlier than I wanted.  This appointment would also be my last regular appointment before the 39… Read More

37 Weeks: Not Yet
I’m there!  I’m officially considered full term, which means that my little girl could choose to make her arrival any day now.  However, I’m not holding my breath because most of the women in my family tend to go over their due date.  But it means that I’ve reached a huge hurdle as a… Read More

Deciding to Bank
There are a lot of big decisions that need to be made before having a baby.  “What kind of travel system should we get?  What color should we paint the nursery?  What prenatal classes should we take?  What hospital should we go to?”  Just to name a few.  And when you… Read More

Tough Weekend with Arnold
In the 4.5 years that I have been on an insulin pump, I’ve had very few instances where the pump had a malfunction.  Usually, I can contribute any random highs on operator error.  But this weekend, I had several instances where I was so frustrated with my pump that I want to call my… Read More

High Risk Outcast
For the past month or so, I’m thankful to say that my pregnancy has been fairly boring.  My weight gain has plateaued (34 lbs.) and so has my insulin resistance (42 units basal, and 1:6 bolus ratio).  The last 2 OB appointments have gone very smooth; in fact, I’ve spent more time in the… Read More

Midnight Low Etiquette with/as a Houseguest
Late night lows are no fun.  They make me lose sleep, I consume extra calories that I don’t want to, and I worry afterward about over-correcting.  My usual routine for late night lows is to shift out of bed, stumble down the hallway to the kitchen, drain some juice until I stop shaking,… Read More

30 Weeks: More of the Same
Things are starting to speed up on the pregnancy front these days.  I’ve began going to my OB every two weeks, and I’m still seeing my endo once a month.  So that means I have an appointment every week for 3 weeks out of the month.  But my appointments are as quick as going through a… Read More

28 Weeks: Dealing with High Blood Pressure and a Cute, Chubby…
Yesterday I had my 28 week checkup with my OB. I was rather excited about this appointment because it had been over a month since my last appointment (you’d think I was missing the place) and this appointment included an ultrasound. I hadn’t seen our little girl for 10 weeks when we found out… Read More

Settling Out
I like this view. Thanks to some recommendations that I received on my last post, this last week of blood sugar management has been a lot better. In fact, I went a whole day without crossing my high threshold on my Dexcom (160 mg/dL). So I want to thank everyone who offered great advice or simply… Read More

High Days are Low Days
I don’t know what’s going on. But every three days, like clockwork, I keep having these extreme highs. Not coincidentally, these highs line up with my site changes, so I feel like there’s some time that my body needs to get used to the new site area. The first meal that I have following a site… Read More

24 Weeks: Tunnel Vision
I am 24 weeks pregnant this week. And the cruel reality that I’m 6 months pregnant but I have 4 to go has hit me. Even though I’m over halfway through this pregnancy, I feel like I have a long way to go. Namely because I discussed my labor plans with my OB and endo this week, which means I have… Read More

Don’t be Afraid to Pee
Well, this post is by far the most embarrassing post I’ve ever written.  It seems that everything is on high alert with a diabetic pregnancy, or maybe just in my mind.  But the two questions my OB always asks me at my appointments are “Any bleeding?” and “Any loss of fluid?”  I… Read More

I Still Get Scared
You’d think being 23 weeks pregnant with a lively, kicking baby would make me feel like I’m “in the clear” as far as anything happening to her or losing her.  But I admit that I still get scared, of what I don’t know.  I just never fully shook the feelings of the first trimester when I… Read More

Meeting the Pediatrician
So per my OB’s request at our last appointment, we started the process of trying to find a pediatrician.  The way we went about this was contacting our insurance company and getting a pre-approved list of pediatricians in our area.  It was really important to me to meet with a… Read More

I’m jealous of those who can finish their workouts
I’ve always had a little insecurity about going to the gym.  Most of the time, I’m content to do 30 minutes on the elliptical or follow along with a class.  I’ve never known my way around the gym completely.  Between all the different machines and my perfectly-built gym goers, I’d… Read More

Safe.
Now that I’m halfway done with my pregnancy, the idea of someone calling me “Mom” one day has me a little weak in the knees.  I’m feeling extremely maternal lately, from choosing our daughter’s future pediatrician and signing up for baby classes (why are there so many classes?!).  But one… Read More
